lifeguard try outs

It is that time of year again when the lifeguard try-outs are going to be held in Huntington Beach for State lifeguard positions. The existing lifeguards re-qualify, and the applicants must pass a competitive swim, and a competitive run - swim - run. For more information, view the Huntington State Beach Lifeguard website.

Lifeguards who are re-qualifying are not required to perform the run - swim - run, however must pass the competitive swim in 20 minutes.

New applicants must compete in both events.

The State Lifeguard Try-Outs are going to be held on March 7, 2009 at 9:00 am at Huntington State Beach. It is recommended to enter the beach right at Magnolia, and park there. Registration is held at lifeguard headquarters.

The criteria is as follows:

Competitive ocean swim consists of a 1000 yard open water swim with a time limit of 20 minutes
Competitive run (200 yard run, 400 yard swim, and 200 yard run) event with a time limit of ten minutes.

The water temperature can be cool (high 50's) so come prepared. Many lifeguards are practicing their open water swim right now despite the cooler temperatures.

Your post put a smile on my face. Sorry I could not sit on the beach that day and watch the try-outs.

Kim - it is a great summer job - though they earn their money, it is a great opportunity.

Kat - I will watch on the day it happens and take pictures. I have seen eagar participants run into the water only to run out when they realize how cold it is.
