Last week, I visited Fashion Island last week to find out if they were in the process of putting up the annual Christmas Tree in the courtyard at Fashion Island. And on a warm afternoon, they were in the process of putting up the tree and adding branches to fill it in. Many of the branches were on the ground and the workers were in the process of creating and filling the tree. The tree branches were narrowed at the ends and placed into holes which were drilled into the tree trunk with shims. It was an interesting process. The tree is also anchored to the buildings. Curious about how the tree stays green throughout the season, the workers explained that after the tree was shaped, they sprayed it with a preservative and fire retardant which keeps it green through out the holiday season.

The annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Fashion Island in Newport Beach will be November 21 - 22, 2008 at 6:00 pm. The tree will have over 23,000 lights and ornaments creating a most beautiful site. The tree lighting will be accompanied by a visit from Santa Claus and a musical named "The Magical Spirit of Christmas."  Olympic medalist Cathy Rigby will be featured in this musical along with a cast of very talented students from the California Conservatory of the Arts in San Juan Capistrano.

Sharon....what an interesting process!

I'm fully convinced that one of these days, tree lighting will be immediately following the July 4th fireworks! I swear the holiday "season" gets longer and longer every year!

Let's hope we don't hear about more "circuit city closings" by the end of this season!

Thom and Ray - you are absolutely right. It is long, and I cannot believe the tree stays green all this time. I'm still in summer mode . . .

Kat - it is veautiful and everyone always loves the tree. I didn't know that they filled it in . . . learn something new every day.

Sharon - is that tree from your front yard?  Or is it going to serve as the mast for your new sailboat when the season's over?

Kent - no . . . I don't have a yard, I've got a three foot side set back . . . and unfortunately not a boat now!

Hey Sharon, this is very cool. We have a bit different ceremony here in Austin. The city strings huge strands of lights from one of our "moon towers" here in Zilker park and then they throw the switch during the opening ceremony. It has the added bonus of being able to walk beneath the structure and hang out in the larger area below the "LIGHT TREE".

Russel - your lighting in Austin sounds very cool, and I would love to see pictures of that!

Harrison - thanks for commenting. I thought it was pretty interesting how they set the tree up and filled it in. It is amazing it stays green with how warm the weather is here.

When I worked at Waldenbooks and Borders up in that area, we used to always go watch the tree lighting. I'm not surprised that Fashion Island would be one of the few places that can still afford to buy a giant tree and put 23,000 lights on it. I do hope, though, that they are prepared for the worst holiday season in decades.
