Today, November 4, 2008 my daughter Heather voted for her first time. She registered before October 20th as that was the cut off. We have been watching the campaigning for the past (how long has it been?) year plus, discussed the candidates, propositions. Heather and I went over the sample ballot together, and she made her own decisions about how to vote, and definitely understood it is a privilege to vote. When Heather came home from school today, we went together to vote down at the Newport Shores clubhouse.

Well, I could not pass up this photo op, so I brought along my camera.

And she is now wearing her "I Voted" sticker.

Congratulations to all first time voters, as it is a momentous time to have your opinion count and respected.
Congratulations Heather!

You must be really proud. So many teenagers don't seem to think it is important to vote and speak out. Good for Heather!
Michael - I am proud of her, and she is very responsible. It was pretty cool!
Sharon, congratulations to Heather on her major milestone today! It's definitely something to be proud of. I remember how my World History teacher in high school would preach to us about how it's our duty as a US citizen to vote. And that was before I even hit 18. I'm impressed to hear you spend so much time walking your daughter through the ballot. The last thing we need are non-educated voters voting for the sake of voting. You've done a great deed for the nation!
I commend her for voting!
Congratulations to your daughter.
Connie - I am very proud of her, and think it is awesome she "wanted" to vote!!! She knows her opinion makes a difference.
Jennifer - thanks for the very nice comment. We went through the ballot so she would not be just "guessing". And from watching debates, speeches, etc. she was able to come up and formulate her own decisions. Thanks!
Sally - I commend her as well, and all the youth who wanted to make a difference!
Steven - thanks for the congrats - I will pass them along!
Congratulations to Heather..............I believe these children are going to change our future and that they are going to be more educated about the issues before voting and make politicians more accountable than our parents did as we are seeing now.
P.S. ....I was so proud of my 21 year old son (who missed registering for the last election due to college football) who not only voted but early voted.......
It is a privilege to vote. To think there was a time that women did not have the freedom to vote. This is why I also feel it is a responsibility - in honor for those who fought for our rights.
Congrats to her. Hope she did not vote you out of business........
Sharon: HOW EXCITING for Heather and you!!! I voted at The Resort, very easy, no lines. Loved it.
Sharon, What a great first year to be able to vote! I'm glad you brought the camera and showed your lovely daughter.
Congrats heather - you'll certainly never forget this one!
Sharon - Congrats to your daughter. It must feel good to have shared that experience with her. i look forward to doing the same with my three daughters!
Julie - I am glad your son got to vote. And I agree that our children will in fact change the future.
Marlene - it is a privilege to vote, and I am so glad my daughter had this opportunity.
Tim - yes congrats to her is in order.
Kat - my voting was easy too, no lines. Just neighbors!
Carole - thanks, she is a good sport or letting me take the pictures, but a good memory.
Steve - most definitely a memorable day.
Todd - yes it was a very good experience indeed. You will definitely enjoy it when your girls are of age.
Congrats Heather! This is your first of many voting opportunities! Keep the faith, it's not always easy to vote your opinion, but stay strong and always remember to vote!
Sharon, I got this in a Google Alert a few days ago. Sorry just getting over here. My daugher 18 voted in her first election too. She was so excited and the newspaper interviewed us. I had gone to vote with Christa, my daugher and buyer agent and Allyssa so I guess they thought it made a good photo opp. I looked horrible and Christa and Allyssa had just come in from working out, oh well.
You have a beautiful daughter, she looks like mom.
Sharon, I love this post. Our son turned 18 last year and this spring we attened the caucas together and we were with him when he voted in the promary. He is now away at school and called to tell us he had voted yesterday and it's a really great thing that our children "get it". I am so proud of all of our children that take part in the process! Great Post!
Melissa - it is definitely the beginning of her right to vote, and I am proud she wanted to.
Missy - thanks for the nice compliment. That is so cool that you had your photo in the paper. That is great your daughter voted for the first time as well.
Russell - thanks so much for the nice comment. That is awesome that you attended the caucas - I am sure your son enjoyed it. It is definitely part of the transition to adulthood.
Sharon: It's great to see the our kids - next generation - take such a serious interest in exercising their right to vote.
Karen - I think it was great she wanted to be involved.
Its great to see the younger generation motivated to take a stand and hear their voice in the future of your country.
James - I completely agree with you about the younger generation getting involved and knowledgable about what is important.
Congrats Heather. I think this election really hit home for a lot of first timers.
That's so cool! My daughter was also a first timer. We celebrated by having a free chicken sandwich (courtesy of the I voted sticker.) It was a very nice excuse to have lunch together.
Georgina - the election really did hit home and it was a historic one indeed.
Chuck - well congratulations to your daught er as well, what an exciting time to have adults make these decisions along with us. Very nice to have lunch together, I love spending time with my kids.
