Things to do in Newport Beach - Visit Catalina

 Avalon, Catalina

Santa Catalina is a rocky island located off the Southern California coast which is approximately 22 miles long, and 8 miles wide. William Wrigley, Junior was instrumental in the development of Catalina Island. Wrigley originally bought the island in 1919 and it was improved with a hotel, services, and the Casino building which still stands today. In 1921, Wrigley sold lots in the city of Avalon. This is the same Wrigley who developed Wrigley chewing gum, and Wrigley also owned the Chicago Cubs. The Chicago ballpark which was originally named Cubs Park, changed it's name to Wrigley Field in 1926 in honor of William Wrigley, Junior.

In Avalon, the Casino is now utilized as a motion picture theater, and the upstairs can be utilized for private events.  The Casino was built with a full circular plan. avalon, casinoIt is definitely a landmark of Avalon, and it is one of the first things you see as you are arriving in the Harbor of Avalon. As you walk up to the Casino, there is beautiful painting in the foyer, and one of the images is done with mosaic tile. foyer of casino

Sharon,

What a lovely place!  Thanks for sharing the info and the photos are gorgeous.  Next time, I visit my son in Costa Mesa, I'll ask him if he'll take us there.  Isn't that what a son is for?

Sharon....Catalina is the sweetest little island, with so many things to keep a visitor busy-having FUN. I LOVE it! It's been far to long since I've paid Catalina a visit.  The tour of the Wrigley mansion was especially interesting.  NICE post!

Sharon ... nice article about Catalina. I've hiked and run the hills there many times ... once even flying into Catalina Airport with friends on a windy day in a single engine airplane.  The landing over a hill and going downhill is interesting there.

Avalon is awesome, I make it out there at least one or two times a year.  I even do some night diving for lobsters.

Rosalinda - for sure have your son bring you to Catalina. It is a very unique area, and there are opportunities to see a lot of marine life as well.

Harrison - I too have landed on that runway in Catalina - and it is interesting as you feel as though it is on a plateau.

I'll never forget sailing a 16' Hobie Cat to Avalon - an trip that is waaaaay to far on such a small boat!  Thank God for the kindly guy at the bar by the marina who towed my friend & I back after a few beers.  (Thank God for looking out for a couple of idiots in their early 20s, too)

Kent - I could never even imagine sailing that far on a 16' hobie - but what an experience. I have crossed many times on different boats - several times hit rough weather with huge waves.

Those homes tucked in the hills look so beautiful!  I want one but don't think I could afford one!  I know who my realtor would be :wink wink:
