The Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard is an amazing program. Both of my children participated in it, and they learn ocean safety, as well as beach safety from the Junior Lifeguard instructors. The photos in this post are of an event of the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard program called the monster mile, where the junior guards run a mile and swim back a mile. It is impressive to see all of them swimming together!

Sharon, this is quite a feat for anyone but oh, so worthwhile and fun. Thinking about competing in that "Monster Mile" kids, don't trust your pool mileage or street running while preparing for that, there's no comparison. Lifeguards for Life!
How cool is this? Another great hyper-local post featuring this and great pictures too!
This sounds like a wonderful program Sharon and develops youngsters at all these ages in the lifeguard program.
HI Kevin - the kids work up to it, and it is an amazing event. And the ocean swimming and running keeps them in great shape!
Hi Russell - thanks! It is a very cool program. There are other coastal cities that provide them for the kids, and I will be posting about those as well!
HI Gary - it does develop their interest. Both my daughters went through the program, and now the older one has been an ocean lifeguard for Huntington Beach for the past four years!
Sharon I'm sitting here - the temp outside is 23 degrees and wishing I was in Newport Beach :)
Newport Beach Junior Guards is such a great program. I know so many who participated in this growing up and loved it.
Hi Karen - sorry it is so chilly there. We have finally had good weather recently although it is supposed to change again.
Hi Christine, it is a great program, and keeps the kids in great shape and learning ocean safety at the same time.
That sounds like a fun and exciting program for Newport Beach area youth!
Sharon: Great event for the kids to learn about participating in this wonderful group activity at an early age!
Sharon, what a terrific localism post for Newport Beach! This is a wonderful activity for children to get involved in...you can see from experience how it helped your oldest daughter find her career! :)
