USLA National Championships Held at Huntington State Beach
August 5-7, 2010

Professional Lifeguards from all over the country competed in the USLA National Championships this past weekend in Huntington State Beach. There were more than 1000 participants. Additionally, there were also Junior Lifeguards events as well. The events included run-swim-runs, relays, surf swims, buoy swims, dory boat competitions and paddle boarding, it was a great event. These lifeguards are in incredible shape and it was a great competition. Below are photos of the swim final for the men.

The water temperature was in the range of 60 to 63 degrees which is pretty cold for this time of year. You would never know the temperature based on how these lifeguards ran into the water.

The USLA Lifeguard National Championships is a unique event and allows the participants to demonstrate their techniques for lifesaving, and their water safety.
This three-day competition was hosted this year by the Huntington State Beach Lifeguard Association (HSBLA) and was held at Huntington State Beach, located at Beach Boulevard and Coast Highway in Huntington Beach. This event was held concurrently with the Hurley US Open in Huntington Beach, so there were many people out.
Another event is the Dory Surf Boat Race, and there are two lifeguards in each boat and they paddle through the waves, around buoys and paddle back in sometimes riding the surf in. There was also a women’s division.

The California State Lifeguards won this Dory boat race. The California State Lifeguards compete as a team for the entire state.
The USLA National Lifeguard Championships was a three day event from August 5-7, 2010, and there were many spectators, and sponsors as well. Next year it will be hosted in Cape May, New Jersey. So it is an opportunity for these very talented lifeguards to compete in different conditions. Each year it is held on different coast. Last year, the event was held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Sharon I suppoose the loudspeskers were playing "Surfing USA" and "California Girls" of whom plenty were in attendance :) Seriously, it is good they have a chance at an award for all their good work on our beaches
Hi Karen, the loudspeakers were actually announcing the results as they came in . . . but you are right about the music, it would have been perfect. And these lifeguards really do have serious jobs. My daughter is a lifeguard for Huntington State Beach, and I am so proud of her.
Sharon, it takes a lot of courage to be a lifeguard. What a great competition to bring them together and test their skills! I do agree about the music, that would have been fitting!
Tony and Darcy - you are right about the courage part, they really do make the difference for a person who might be struggling in the water.
Sharon~
How much fun and excitement is this!!! WOW...and those lifeguards remind me of years gone by...=)
HI JaneAnne - it was really amazing to watch these lifeguards compete. I am so amazing at what good shape they are in and can compete in these varying conditions.
This is very cool. I always wanted to learn how to surf. Unfortunately living in Minnesota makes it tough.
I had to stop by and say hello after such a nice message on my blog!
HI Nate - thanks so much and hope it helps. There is much support and friendship here on the Rain.
Ohhhhh . . . Huntington! I buy Coppertone sunscreen just to recreate the smell of those beaches from when I was a kid! Supercool post and pics!!!
Hi Candice - I love it there as well, and the smell of coppertone too! It was a pretty cool event!
That's some serious eye candy. LOL
Russel - the lifeguards are in such good shape!
