Big Waves Hit the Wedge in Newport Beach

Huge Waves Hit  the Wedge in Newport Beach
The Wedge - Newport Beach
There is a swell that is currently hitting the south facing beaches including the Wedge in Newport Beach. Newport Beach is known for the Wedge, and there were some incredible waves. The waves were as high as 20 feet or even higher, and there were many body boarders, surfers who were riding those monsters. The Wedge in Newport Beach is located at the end of the Balboa Peninsula, and there is a rock jetty right next to it even making it more dangerous. The waves and surf are extremely treacherous, and are really only for the experts. There were lifeguards stationed along the water's edge, and the lifeguard boat was picking people up behind the waves.

Truly amazing waves at the Wedge in Newport Beach  If you are planning on going to the Wedge today or tomorrow, there is a LOT of traffic both getting there, and driving off the Peninsula. If you are local, ride your bike. Thats what we did last night, and are going to again today. There were at least 1000 people watching the waves, and riders, the crowd was cheering. There were also 7 news vans. Absolutely incredible.

Also, don't forget today is the last weekend for the Hurley US Open Surfing Championships. Also, that US Open should be amazing with this swell including the Wedge in Newport Beach. If you want to see more photos, see my album on Facebook.

Sharon, That is absolutely incredible!  The height of those waves and people riding them...I didn't think even the best surfers would go out when they're that high!

Hi Sharon,

You have some of the most AMAZING shots I've of the action.

The surf was the most unbelievable I've ever seen in So Cal, the crowds at the Wedge were there to experience it. I'd imagine there were thousand of bystanders. Truly an unusual phenom in OC.

And yes, I was there yesterday on my bike at the Wedge  just prior to the ER arriving for the bodysurfer who lost his life. Seeing people in the sand, standing arm in arm in a circule we all realized it was tragic...a loss of life.  Something  I will remember.

Thanks for posting this! I only saw a snippet on the news and couldn't get enough! I bet the surf champ contenders are LOVING THIS! I miss the beach (I know you get sick of hearing me say that!) I really need to get there before the end of Sept so I can take a couple of waves myself!

HI Sharon: these are some awesome waves...now you will have Renee visiting at one point! I haven't seen anything close to this since being on a liner in the middle of the Atlantic!

Sharon, these waves are incredible! Florida has nothing that can compare with these. It's so funny to me that we had some world champions including Kelly Slater and a female champ who were from Cocoa Beach - when you're the ones who have the surf!
