Chino Airport and the Planes of Fame Museum

Any Pilots or aviation enthusiasts out there? There is a fantastic general aviation airport in Southern California - Chino Airport. It is about a 30 minute drive from the Orange County area.

Chino Airport is located at 700 Merrill, Chino, CA. The FAA identifier for Chino is CNO. There are three runways at Chino Airport - runway 8R/26L, 8L/26R and 3/21. If you fly, verify which runways are in use by contacting ATIS - automatic terminal information service

Did you know that runways are generally numbered in the magnetic azimuth of the runway's direction? The landing may change in accordance with the wind direction, as you want to land into the wind.

When we have Santa Ana conditions (like we do today - means it is windy with off shore winds), often times aircraft will land on the same runway, just in the other direction because of the wind.  The closest commercial airport to Newport Beach is John Wayne Santa Ana - and their runway directions are 1L/19R and 1R/19L (the two numbers always differ by 18 =180 degrees.

Below is a photo of the control tower at Chino Airport.

Chino Airport is a general aviation airport. It is also home to two museums which have warbirds. There is also an air show once a year and it is in May. I have attended this event and it is quite amazing to see some of these planes take flight.

The Planes of Fame Museum is a non profit organization and relies on donations. The Planes of Fame air museum is actually a living history museum, and the aircraft are preserved and are still flying.

The Yanks Air Museum  is also located at Chino Airport and does historical restoration of aircraft.

Chino Airport has hangers that are owned and there are also some for rent. There are also flight schools at Chino Airport. And it is home to the famous Flo's Airport Cafe (telephone info - 909-597-3416). Many will flight into Chino Airport just to eat lunch at Flo's.

It is an interesting airport and there are many historical planes as well as new planes, and it is enjoyable to visit. Hope you have a chance to visit Chino Airport.
