lifeguard try outs

It is that time of year again when the lifeguard try-outs are going to be held in Huntington Beach for State lifeguard positions. The existing lifeguards re-qualify, and the applicants must pass a competitive swim, and a competitive run - swim - run. For more information, view the Huntington State Beach Lifeguard website.

Lifeguards who are re-qualifying are not required to perform the run - swim - run, however must pass the competitive swim in 20 minutes.

New applicants must compete in both events.

The State Lifeguard Try-Outs are going to be held on March 7, 2009 at 9:00 am at Huntington State Beach. It is recommended to enter the beach right at Magnolia, and park there. Registration is held at lifeguard headquarters.

The criteria is as follows:

Competitive ocean swim consists of a 1000 yard open water swim with a time limit of 20 minutes
Competitive run (200 yard run, 400 yard swim, and 200 yard run) event with a time limit of ten minutes.

The water temperature can be cool (high 50's) so come prepared. Many lifeguards are practicing their open water swim right now despite the cooler temperatures.

Does Your Garage Door Need Some "Action"?

Does Your Garage Door Need Some "Action"?

I am writing this post today because this weekend, my children heard a loud bang in the garage, and they did not know what it was. As it turns out, the spring broke on the garage door, and I was not able to get my car out of the garage!  Fortunately my daughter has a car and I used her car.

I called Action Garage Doors located in Fullerton, Ron Thompson to be specific. Ron Thompson is the owner of Action Garage Door Service and has been to my home many times serving my garage door. I called him first thing this morning at 7 am, and he answered (thank you for answering your phone so early). I explained the springs broke, and he gave me a quote to fix it on the phone. I said no problem, because I really wanted to get my car out of the garage. Can you say land locked???

Ron showed up early (which was absolutely fine with me). After about thirty minutes, he came and found me and told me he was all finished. I asked him for the bill, and he explained  that he had already replaced the springs on an earlier visit, and my bill was less than HALF of what he quoted me on the phone.

In all honesty, I don't remember him changing the springs - but he recognized his work, and warrantied it. He did not want to charge me unnecessarily for something his own company warranties.

So, if your garage door needs some "Action", then call Ron Thompson at Action Garage Door Service for honest and reliable service. Action Garage Door Service services all of Orange County.

Surfing In Newport Beach

Surfing in Newport Beach

lifeguard tower in Huntington Beach

Although there is no lifeguard on duty during the winter months (the photo above is a lifeguard tower at Huntington State Beach) many residents and die hard surfers do not let the cooler water deter them from surfing. With the Santa Ana winds, this creates the off shore wind. This day was particularly clear with a great view of Catalina Island in the distance. You will often see visitors arriving and parking at the beach, or riding their bikes with their surf boards to go and catch the waves.

The off shore winds can be seen by the mist blowing off the top of the waves.

The air temperature was in the mid seventies, and the water temperature was in the high fifties. The surfers typically all wear wet suits, and some wear booties and gloves. (However, when I asked my daughter if she wore booties, she told me no because she is "not a baby").

Even if you do not surf, it is a pleasant way to start the day by watching the surfers and the waves.

If you are in need of a surf board, wet suit or other surfing related apparel, please visit the Frog House which is located at 6908 W Coast Highway, Newport Beach. TK Brimer presides over the Frog House which is located at the north end of Newport Beach. The Frog House has been in existence since 1963, and the staff and stories are considered to be hard core surf. The Frog House caters to all levels of surfing from beginners to the expert level.

The Frog House is located right across the street from the river jetty (a popular surfing spot) and 56th street - which is another popular surfing location. Also, it is located on Coast Highway right next to Newport Shores.
